ATMOS Level 2 Data

ATMOS Version 2 Release - 10/25/95

Directory Architecture:

The AMES files have been created and uplinked to the DAAC independently from the other files in the release. The other files have been placed in the following directories:

*.mol ./pub/atmos/version2/P_gridded/"mission"/"molecule"
*.ocn ./pub/atmos/version2/P_gridded/"mission"/ocn_files
*.ptmol ./pub/atmos/version2/Pt_gridded/"mission"-pt/"molecule"
*.ptocn ./pub/atmos/version2/Pt_gridded/"mission"-pt/pto_files

You can find the results by anonymous ftp to thunder.jpl.nasa.gov/atmos/version2.

Description of Products

-----------------------

Molecule Files

--------------
The two lowest-level file types are "gridded data products". These two file types contain height, pressure, temperature, VMR, VMR Error, and potential temperature. One has all quantities projected onto a standard pressure grid (*.mol files), and the other has quantities mapped onto a potential temperature grid (*.ptmol files). The format of these two files is identical. There is one file per molecule per occultation.

The pressure-gridded product described above ("mol file") has been changed from the version #1 delivery "atm" file in two ways. 1) The pressure grid is no longer extended at the top and bottom by extrapolation. This results in two fewer data points in each "mol" file compared with the version #1 offerings; 2) a potential temperature column has been added as a sixth column.

Occultation Files

-----------------
The gridded molecular files are merged on an individual occultation basis with UKMO potential vorticity (PV) and scaled potential vorticity (sPV) added (see ref.#8). As with the molecule files, the two files are gridded on pressure (*.ocn) and potential temperature (*.ptocn). (Fig.3,4)

The VMR and VMR Error are given a fixed location in each file, whether or not the actual values are retrieved. All levels in the defined grid are present in each file, whether or not there is data for each level. This results in a fixed number of data records for each file type. For species that are not retrieved for a given occultation, a filler value of -9999.0 is substituted. Missing height or temperature values are filled with -99.9

One change from the previous releases is in the header. If a molecule is not included in an ocn file, the header entry for that molecule will read:

"molecule"_XXXX instead of "molecule"_"occultation", e.g., o3_XXXX vs. o3_sr02

Mission Files

The gridded occultation files are merged for each mission with columns of occultation, date, time, 30 km latitude, 30 km longitude, filter, UKMO potential vorticity (PV) and scaled potential vorticity (sPV) added (see ref.#8). As with the occultation files, the two files are gridded on pressure (*.mis) and potential temperature (*.ptmis).

The VMR and VMR Error are given a fixed location in each file, whether or not the actual values are retrieved. All levels in the defined grid are present in each file, whether or not there is data for each level. This results in a fixed number of data records for each file type. For species that are not retrieved for a given occultation, a filler value of -9999.9 is substituted. Missing height or temperature values are filled with -99.9

AMES Files

AMES files have been created for transfer to the Goddard DAAC in accordance with Ref #5. The files have been created using ODS2AMES (Ref.#6) and ancillary code. Each file contains ATMOS data, in AMES format, grouped by GMT day.
