A number of JPL scientists and engineers are in Kiruna, Sweden during the winter of 2002/2003 to study the Arctic ozone layer. Their activities are part of campaigns sponsored by NASA and the European Union. The ozone layer is being observed by JPL instruments on the ground as well as by instruments aboard:

• several space borne satellites, including the new NASA SAGE III instrument aboard a Russian Meteor 3M satellite;
  
  
• three aircraft: the NASA DC-8, the Russian M55 Geophysica, and the German Falcon;
  
  
• high altitude balloons.
