The three research aircraft used to study the ozone layer: the NASA
DC-8, the DLR Falcon, and the Russian M55 Geophysica. The airplanes are
housed simultaneously inside the Arena Arctica hangar.
Russian support staff routinely walk along the aircraft
wings during instrument preparations (as pictured). Hans Schlager,
co-lead of the European effort, is in the foreground.
We play "musical airplanes" when the aircraft at
the back end of the hangar needs to be towed outside
on a day when the other planes are not flying.
