A real hotel room, from the
"Ice Hotel" in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden (the next town over from Kiruna).
This is one of about 30 suites, each with a unique decoration of ice
art and snow sculptures. The rear illumination is sun light, passing
through translucent ice windows. Glow under the bed is from
low wattage light bulbs. Inside temperature is about
25 F. Guests are provided thermal sleeping bags and, we are told,
accommodation includes
a cup of hot lingonberry juice at your bedside in morning (yum yum).
The Ice Hotel accommodates several hundred guests per night and reservations
are truly hard to obtain. However, since the cost is above the JPL
per diem allowance, the JPL'ers have opted to stay in more temperate
hotel rooms.
